Intermittent Fasting, Is it For You ?

March 10, 2019

What happened to DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST??

So which is it?  This new idea that fasting for 14-16 hours for weight management and health benefits as we get older challenges what we have been told for decades…..”Don’t skip breakfast”, “Eat small meals to keep your metabolism going”.  Makes my life challenging I tell ya!! Explain this to clients! So fasting has been around forever.  The idea that is is incredibly good for us has been more popular lately.  There are many ways we can fast for health, and many opinions on how to intermittent fast.

I hate not eating. I am a foodie, I admit it. A trainer, my whole life and a sold out foodie, since I was like 5.  I have done intermittent fasting, and I can sustain this type of fast without much difficulty.  The version I did, and have had a few clients do…with success, is this…  No food after 5 or 6 at night, until 9 am the next morning. 14 to 16 hours with no food. Water and herbal tea is all we had.  I only did this 5 days on 2 days off.  I did lose a couple pounds and felt great.  I have had clients that love the results!   It does work, and I do think it is an option for some. The benefits of intermittent fasting can be great. From weight loss, to cardiovascular benefits as well as diabetes.  Here are a few easy lifestyle changes to consider if you are looking into intermittent fasting.

  1. Allow your body to burn fat between meals. Don’t snack.
  2. Be active throughout your day. Build muscle through strength training.
  3. Consider a simple form of intermittent fasting. Limit the hours of the day when you eat, say 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  4. Avoid snacking or eating at nighttime, always

Have you tried intermittent fasting??  How did you do?  Comments are welcome!!
