Dangers Of Air Fresheners, Protect Your Family!

March 11, 2018

Plastic plug-in air fresheners.

Ditch dangerous, air freshers they don’t freshen anything, opt for a diffuser instead!

Have you ever walked in a room that has a plug in air freshener and gotten a headache, nauseous or dizzy?. Or your dog starts sneezing…Or worse had respiratory difficulties? You are not alone, I am one of those people also. These so called air fresheners are masking odors, not removing them, and they are causing harm. Harm to ourselves and the ones we share our air with, our families, friends  and our pets.

Plug ins, solids and sprays, they are everywhere we go, and it’s about time we took a look at what we are breathing in. Why is it second hand smoke gets so much attention but chemicals in products that fill our air do not?  Well the Environmental protection agency (EPA) and environ mental groups like EWG.org have been taking a much closer look.

Febreze is popular one, lets take a look,  Febreze does not disclose much information about their products, but the Environmental Working Group ( EWG) conducted a test on one of their products, Febreze Air Effects. The shocking results of this study found that even though the company only disclosed three ingredients in the product, EWG found 87 chemicals in all.  Here is the link where you will find how horribly these products rated:

https://www.ewg.org/guides/brand/6531#.WqH6C2aZPq0

Febreze does not remove odor molecules as they claim. It does not clean anything. It adds dangerous chemicals.  Heres a few:

  • The chemical 1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol has been linked to cancer.
  • Methyl pyrrolidone is toxic to reproduction and development.
  • Gerinoil irritates skin, eyes, and lungs.
  • Hexyl cinnamal is an allergen.
  • Propylene glycol also causes cancer, causes allergies, and is toxic to the immune system.
  • Ethyl acetate is linked to neurotoxicity.
  • Alcohol denatured has been known to cause organ system toxicity.
  • Ethylhexanol-irritates skin, eyes, and lungs and is toxic to reproduction and development systems.
  • Linalool is an immunotoxin.

And this is just Febreze….how about the others? the glade plug ins, the solids…ohhh how about smells be gone? Heres a good one, ingredients: Unknown. HUH??? Yep heres a link:

https://www.ewg.org/guides/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=smells+be+gone&x=54&y=21&page=1&per_page=15#.WqH9XmaZPq1

These companies do not have to disclose ingredients, yet we breathe  them into our lungs. There is something VERY wrong with this picture.

I’d rather have organic dirt and organic smells in my home and open a window, or clean with my thieves essential oil cleaners. If I need too I spray some DIY essential oil spray….or even better I diffuse my oils into the air that I can feel good about breathing in. I have an essential oil I love to diffuse when I cook fish or want to get some organic scent (skunk sprayed dog) out of my home, it really works and smells great!

We have a choice to stop this nonsense of masking odors, or believing plug-in and solid air fresheners are making our home more pleasant.  Join me in ditching synthetic fragrances and toxic scented candles, get a diffuser with organic essential oils that have therapeutic benefits….you will be happy you did!
