Protein Powder Dangers: New Study

March 10, 2018

Scoop of Protein Powder

Researchers from the Clean Label Project, a nonprofit that focuses on consumer product labeling, recently conducted a study  to determine possible dangers associated with popular protein powders.

They tested 134 of the top selling protein powders . Products were screened for over 130 toxins including heavy metals, BPA, pesticides, and other contaminants with links to cancer and other health conditions. After analyzing they found over 50% had BPA and over 70% had detectable levels of  heavy metals, including lead, cadmium and arsenic. You can see the study here.

The kicker… the organic powders on average had more than twice the amount of metals than the non-organic ones. And about 75 percent of the plant-based powders tested positive for lead.

I’ve taught many friends and clients how to read labels on protein powders, because so many have chemical sweeteners and other processed chemical ingredients, but lead?  This obviously was not on the label.  My take on this….They are still processed. The soil may have been contaminated. No matter which one you buy, one may be cleaner, but you are still better off eating real food. Not processed, adulterated, man made food. It may take a little more time, but boil some eggs, cut up an avocado, there are many easy, healthy ways to eat real food ! Nature created.
