Muscle weighs more but is more dense that fat

November 29, 2019

Muscle is your friend!  It will not make you bigger ladies!  Here is something I hear often from clients.”I don’t want my arms bigger…I want to be stronger and leaner tho.”  Many of my new clients make sure I am aware of this 🙂  What they typically don’t understand is that it is the fat on top of the muscle that is making their arms big.  Fat is “bigger” than muscle. Muscle is more “dense” or “smaller”  that fat.  It is not that easy to build muscle, it takes work.  But it is very possible.

Why is this important to understand?  Because maintaining muscle and building muscle is key to keeping weight off.  So, muscle weighs more that fat…Think of it this way, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat.  The difference is that muscle is much more dense than fat. So…a pound of muscle will take up much less room in your body than a pound of fat.  This is why many of my clients may see their clothes fitting better and inches coming off, but the weight does not go down like they may think.  Of course there are times when someone may need to lose a lot of body-fat, and the scale will show this, but it is still best for them to maintain muscle when they are losing. So gain a  pound of muscle lose a couple pounds of fat….this is the progression you want to strive for.  Again why?  So your metabolism stays up, and you keep the fat you lost off.  Remember muscle burns calories, it revs up your metabolism.  The more dense muscle you have, the more fat you burn. Burn fat and build muscle.  This leads to smaller arms, not bigger arms. Focus on eating clean.  Cut out processed foods and sugars. Eat more home cooked, natural meals.   More raw, plant based foods.  Pick up the weights and build muscle ladies, don’t be afraid of the very thing you need to stay lean.
