Since May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month why not talk about the VERY best thing you can do to prevent bone loss and even build bone. YES build bone.
Strength training and particularly WEIGHT TRAINING stresses bone in a good way. The muscles, under load, pull and tug on the bone which stimulates the amazing bone building process. It truly is incredible.
Maintaining strong muscles through weight training also keeps up our balance and coordination! Muscle increases strength, strength increases balance, so we become stronger and less likely to fall as we age.
If you already have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and do not want to chance the serious side effects of Osteo drugs, pick up the weights. A trainer that is educated on osteoporosis will know the risks, be safe and you need not be scared.
Strength training is by far the MOST important thing we can do to preserve and even build bone as we age and you only need two 30 minute sessions a week to reap the benefits 🙂
