Do You Know What’s In Your Tea Bag?

November 17, 2022

Tea bag sitting on table with leaves in the background.

Michigan winters call for a lot of hot tea, and I am definitely one of those girls that enjoys my tea collection! Unfortunately, toxic pesticides have been found in certain tea bags as well as plastic and heavy metals.

I have collected many types of teas over the years, from medicinal teas for colds, to lavender and chamomile for sleep.  I never tire of my cup of tea!  I did notice though over the last few years some of them tasted different.  I started researching and really looking at the ingredients and noticed not only were they adding ingredients that were not natural like “natural flavors”, but certain companies were found to have pesticides, heavy metals and even plastic in their tea and bags!

There are brands out there that have been found to contain illegal pesticides including some of the most popular store-bought brands. That’s scary!

As for the plastic, there are brands that use plastic to seal their tea bags.  I found some information on which companies do and do not use plastic, at least as of now.  Here they are:

Brands that don’t contain plastic:
(even though some have “natural flavors”)
  • Traditional Medicinals (my fav)
  • Pukka
  • Numi
  • Republic Of Tea
  • Stash
  • Yogi
Brands That Do Contain Plastic:
  • Tazo
  • Teavana (Starbucks)
  • Celestial Seasonings
  • Mighty Leaf Teas (Peet’s)

I will not stop drinking tea!  So from what I have found so far it is best to be careful where you get your tea. Many are healthy and natural.  Many are not.  Find brands that are organic with no illegal herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers.  Read labels as well!I just want tea.  Not “natural flavors”, sugars and other added ingredients that are not healthy.  If I want a little sweet I add raw honey or a little maple syrup.

I did my research and up untill now I’m happy my favorite teas are on the list! Here are some of them: Traditional Medicinals, Numi and Pukka. Read labels, do your research and you will be healthier for it!
